BREAKING NEWS: Nobel Laureate Soyinka’s Daughter Dies

Iyetade Soyinka, a daughter of Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, has died. Ms. Soyinka, who was born June 6, 1965, died at the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital where she was being treated for an undisclosed ailment. The death was disclosed in a statement signed by Jahman Anikulapo, an aide to Mr. Soyinka, one of the world’s foremost dramatists and winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in literature. The statement noted that the late Iyetade Soyinka was a student at the Staff School and Queens School, Ibadan before she studied Medicine at the University of Ibadan. TREATMENTS.

Combined chemotherapy and radiation
Doctors usually treat an*l cancer with a combination of chemotherapy and radiation. Combined, these two treatments enhance each other and improve chances for a cure.
Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy drugs are injected into a vein or taken as pills. The chemicals travel throughout your body, killing rapidly growing cells, such as cancer cells. Unfortunately they also damage healthy cells that grow rapidly, including those in your gastrointestinal tract and in your hair follicles. This causes side effects such as nausea, vomiting and hair loss.

31-year-old pregnant banker who was arrested by the lagos state police command for cutting her 34-year-old husband’s man-hood during a fight at their home in Surulere has explained why she did it.

“Please, kindly judge this by yourself. As a pregnant woman, will I willingly attempt to cut off my husband’s man-hood? I ordinarily would not have said anything. I did not realise this will escalate to this stage. The case is being handled by my lawyer at the moment.

“My husband is not a hot-tempered man but he gets angry once in a while. He lied that he washes my clothes. He only did that once or twice when I was ill. We had a disagreement that day and he beat me up. My mother came to the house and took away our son.

“Without telling anybody, I went to my hospital and was treated. I did not tell him. But when I got home, he continued to harass me. He said I must ensure his son was returned to the house.

“I was so tired and I went to sleep. But in the middle of the night, he woke me up and asked me again to produce his son. We started fighting and he was beating me. In order to escape his beating, I had to hold his man-hood. I wanted him to leave me alone. I held on to it until I had a chance to escape.”

“Please ask him, which certificate is he even talking about? When I married my husband, he told me he graduated from the Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye, but that he had an accident some time ago, in which his certificates were burnt,” she said.

“When I married him, he did not have a job. He said he was working on a CD and all the money I made, I spent on him.”

Her husband however told a different story.

He said, “My pastor had advised me against marrying her because of an encounter he had with her. Before we got married, in a meeting with Bimbo, my pastor said he asked her about her past and my wife said, ‘How dare you!’

“Of course, I did not believe my pastor at the time because I was in love. But now, I rue the day I met that woman.”

Lekan alleged that his wife had been behaving strangely since he lost his job. He stated that he had done everything he could to ensure that she remained happy.

“I wash her clothes including her underwear. Even without a job, I ensure that the proceeds of my gospel music CD are used to take care of her and our son,” he said.

The apartment Lekan shared with his wife is a mini-flat. Asked who paid for the apartment, the man said the house belonged to his father.

According to him, he was living in a rented apartment in Ikorodu before relocating to his father’s house in Surulere so that it would be easier for his wife to get to work.

Lekan explained that Bimbo was a good woman at the time.

He said, “I married her legally. We did a church wedding, went to court and did the traditional wedding. But when I lost my job, I realised that after a little disagreement, she would rain abuses on me and my family.

“She would sometimes destroy things in the house. There was a time we had a disagreement and she chased me down the street with a stick. During another disagreement, she took my HND certificate to the end of the street and dropped it beside a gate. Neighbours had to plead with her to bring it back.”

He narrated to Saturday PUNCH how his wife attacked him.

“That fateful day, I was washing my wife’s clothes. She reminded me that she needed some money for foodstuffs and I told her that God would provide for us. Later, she came out of the house and said she had eaten noodles and had fed our son.

“When I finished with the clothes, I was so tired because the clothes were many. I ate the leftover of her noodles. There were about three-spoonfuls left.”

Lekan alleged that that did not go down well with his wife who said she still wanted to eat the leftover.

He said he had to go to the street to buy bread for her since she said she was still hungry.

He further explained that he had to go out shortly after to get some money from a salesman who handles his CD sales.

“I came home and informed my wife that I got some money from my CD. She told me that she would like to eat wheat and white soup which I usually buy for her from a restaurant. I bought that for her,” he said.

By that time, Lekan said the only thing he had eaten that day was the leftover noodles. He said the remaining money from the CD sales had been used to buy things needed in the house.

But his elder sister who had a shop nearby was to later give him N500 when she noticed that he did not look like he was feeling well.

“I went out to buy rice and when I came in and she saw me eating that, she flared up. She said I lied to her that I had no money. She was shouting but I pleaded with her to calm down so that my people around would not hear. She replied that it would not be well with the people. She abused my relations and parents.

“The following day, a Sunday, I swallowed my pride. I woke up and asked which clothes she would like to wear to church so that I could iron it with mine. When she did not answer, I left for church but came back after the workers’ meeting.

“I got home and saw her preparing jollof rice but I went out to buy N60 bread and N40 beans. Trouble started again when she saw me eating that. She said I refused to give her money but I was buying food to eat. She said, ‘Before I say anything now, you will go and complain to your useless family.’ That was when I told her that it was her whole family that was useless. Had I known, I would have kept quiet. She took the plate of beans and poured it on my head.”

But Lekan said even though many men would have pummelled such a woman, he feared he might kill her in anger. The matter died down, or so it seemed.

Around 2am, Lekan said he received a sudden and painful knock that woke him up from sleep and realised that it was from his wife.

“I knew she had decided to start her trouble again. But I did not in my wildest imagination think that she could do what she did next.

“Before I realised what she was doing, I felt a sharp pain in my manhood. I touched it and blood was gushing out. I screamed and my immediate thought was, ‘Is this the way I would die?’”

Lekan pointed to a kitchen knife in a corner of his room. He said it was the weapon his wife used.

The wound inflicted on Lekan’s manhood was deep but it had been stitched after he was rushed to the hospital by neighbours.

Lekan said he is not pressing charges against his wife.

Egypt Intensifies Crackdown On Muslim Brotherhood

23 Muslim Brotherhood supporters have been arrested by Egyptian authorities on accusations of belonging to a terrorist organisation, a day after the country’s interim government blacklisted the group.
The people arrested on Thursday were accused of passing out leaflets in support of the Brotherhood, promoting the group’s ideology, and inciting violence against the Egyptian security services, according to Egypt’s state media agency, MENA.
Later on Thursday, one person was killed as student supporters of the Brotherhood clashed with residents of a Cairo district where they were protesting.
“Egypt will stand firmly in confronting terrorism and the people will never be afraid as long as the army is present,” said Egyptian army chief General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, during an army graduation ceremony on Thursday in Cairo.
The arrests come only a day after Egypt’s interim government declared the Muslim Brotherhood, to which deposed former President Mohamed Morsi belongs, a terrorist group.
The designation means anyone accused of taking part in pro-Muslim Brotherhood rallies, possession of the group’s literature, or supporting the group “verbally or in writing” could be sentenced to five years in prison, the Interior Ministry said.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry has expressed concern over Egypt’s intensified pursuit of the Muslim Brotherhood in a phone call, Thursday, with his counterpart in Cairo Nabil Fahmy.
Kerry condemned a suicide bombing in Mansoura on Tuesday and Thursday’s bus bombing in Cairo, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.
The top American diplomat also “expressed concern about the interim Egyptian government’s December 25 terrorist designation of the Muslim Brotherhood, and recent detentions and arrests,” Psaki said.
The Brotherhood still organises almost daily protests demanding Morsi’s return, nearly six months after he was overthrown following widespread popular protests.

OUTRAGE: Another Nigerian Nearly Lynched in India

The “second-class” citizen nature of Nigerians living in India was again brought to the fore this week after the police in Vashi, Mumbai, failed to register any complaint against a mob of over 100 people who nearly lynched Onouha Lucky.

The mob attack on 24-year-old Nigerian occurred after he had a petty squabble over N13 (about Rs5) with a shoeshine vendor.
Lucky asked the cobbler, identified as Sheshrao Purbe, to polish his shoes.
Purbe narrated that he usually charged N26 (about Rs 10), but the Nigerian threw Rs 5 at him.
This led to an argument and Purbe was punched hard on his face. The fight between the two soon attracted a crowd and a mob surrounded the alien.
The angry mob started slapping and punching Lucky. He ran into the Vashi railway station and hid himself in a foodstall to save himself from being lynched. However, he had been spotted by someone, and the mob continued beating Lucky for about 15 minutes before the police rescued him.
The embattled Nigerian was sent to 2-week custody on Tuesday for assaulting the cobbler but the police failed to register any complaint against the mob of over 100 people who had attacked the Nigerian.

“Although it was wrong on part of the Nigerian to hit the cobbler, it was equally wrong on part of the mob to badly beat up the Nigerian and tear his clothes. Therefore, he too has the right to lodge a complaint against the mob, but Vashi police has not done so,” RTI activist and lawyer, Vinod Gangwal, commented.

It would be noted that the Times of India (TOI) photographer, K K Choudhary, was attacked by a few persons from the same mob which was hitting the Nigerian, as they were afraid that their illegal act would be caught on camera and published in the newspaper.
Meanwhile, the cobbler, Purbe, told TOI that the municipal hospital at Vashi have recommended an X-ray of his three front teeth which were affected after he was punched by the Nigerian.
Purbe’s medical report states that his front teeth are showing ‘Grade 1 mobility’ (slight loosening due to the fight).

Lebanese Abducted In Kano Rescued By The Police

Men of the Kano State Police Command on Friday rescued the abducted Lebanese national, Mr. Hassan Zeid.
Confirming the rescue, Police spokesman, ASP. Musa Magaji Majia explained that the rescue happened after the Force blocked all Kano exit points, including major and minor roads to ensure that the captors did not leave Kano.
In a press statement made available to reporters in Kano on Friday, Majia said the Lebanese was found by a team of policemen abandoned in the outskirt of Sharada unhurt.
According to the police command, “the abducted Lebanese has been re-united with his family, no arrest has been made yet, investigation is in top gear with a view to arrest the perpetrators of the act”.
The Lebanese national was Monday abducted at his factory in Sharada industrial estate by unknown gunmen.

Calabar Carnival Is A Brand Worth Promoting – Imoke

Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke has described Calabar Carnival as a unique brand that should be jealously protected and promoted.
Speaking at the event’s command performance night in Calabar as part of activities for the carnival, Imoke said the beauty of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage was expressed in the carnival.
“The beauty of Nigeria is wholly expressed in the Calabar festival and the unique brand should be jealously protected and promoted by all,” the governor said.
He therefore called on governments at all levels and the private sector to ensure all hands were on deck so as to see to it that the carnival was protected, noting that this would serve as a way to continue attracting both local and international support for the country.
“Carnival Calabar can be identified internationally and exported around the world.
“It has become a brand that everyone has identified with because it is about the people. So, with or without government behind it, it has become an international brand.
“After Nollywood, Carnival Calabar is the highest brand in Africa and it is unique because, unlike others, it is designed, programmed and costumed through passion and creativity,” he said.
Also speaking on the carnival, sponsor of the Brazilian Samba team to the carnival, Ms Karen Sauza said another Brazilian band would be participating at the adult carnival.
She said the band would showcase some popular Brazilian songs.
Sauza said the continuous participation of Brazilian bands at the carnival affords both Nigeria and Brazil the opportunity for cultural exchanges.
She commended Governor Imoke for promoting the carnival.

Waitress Accused of Forcing a Man at Gunpoint to Have s*x With Her Friend

A fast food waitress from suburban Chicago has been charged with s*xual assault on a man, who told police that the 25-year-old had forced him to have s*x with her friend in the backseat of a car after offering him a ride.
Cierra Ross, a mother of two from Olympia Fields, was arrested Tuesday for her part in the alleged r*pe of a 33-year-old man.
According to police, the victim was walking in the 400 block of North Kingsbury when Miss Ross pulled up next op him and offered him a lift home.
A short time later, the Denny’s waitress allegedly pulled a revolver on him, ordering him to climb into the backseat and take off his clothes.
Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Amanda Pillsbury told The Chicago Sun-Times that Ross then forced the 33-year-old at gunpoint to have s*x with her friend.
In the course of the encounter, the man was allegedly instructed to fondle the woman’s br**sts and buttocks.
The two female suspects also allegedly robbed their victim, getting away with $200 in cash, credit cards and an iPhone.
The unnamed man reportedly begged his assailants to stop, but was eventually able to escape from the car, running down the street unclad from the waist down.
The 33-year-old spotted a taxi nearby and asked for the driver’s help. The Good Samaritan agreed to let him use his cell phone to snap a picture of Ross’ license plate and email it to himself.
The alleged victim later contacted police and identified Ross from a lineup. Her friend was not charged in connection to the r*pe.
Miss Ross, who also goes by the alias Octavia Brown, is being held on $75,000 bail. Her criminal record includes a number of misdemeanor prostitution charges.

Court Orders Man Who Fractured Girlfriend’s Skull To Write “Boys Do Not Hit Girls” 5000 Times

A man who punched his girlfriend in the face, fracturing her skull in three places, has been jailed for a maximum six months for misdemeanour assault.

Pacer Anthony Ferguson was also ordered by Yellowstone County District Court judge G Todd Baugh to write “boys do not hit girls” 5000 times.
Ferguson, of Billings, Montana, has to number the list, sign it and mail it to the district court judge by May 23, the Billings Gazette reported.
He was also ordered to pay $3,800 towards his girlfriend’s medical bills.
Ferguson admitted in court that he punched his girlfriend in the face during an argument on August 24, 2012.
His girlfriend, who had to have a permanent mesh titanium plate inserted, gave evidence during the four-day trial stating that she suffered from double vision when she looks up or down and has occasional numbness and pain in her face.
The jury convicted Ferguson of the misdemeanour assault charge. He was acquitted of more serious charges of felony aggravated assault and felony witness tampering.
Ferguson though had to appear was next before District Judge Gregory R. Todd for a disposition hearing on a sentence for a felony attempted robbery – he attempted to rob a man with a knife – in 2003.
“As you know, we’ve seen each other over the course of many years – from the start of my judgeship,” Todd told Ferguson, adding that he is going into his 14th year as a judge.
He ruled that Ferguson violated the terms of his release for the 2003 robbery multiple times, including the misdemeanour assault, and ordered him to spend eight years in Montana State Prison.
The sentence will run concurrent to Ferguson’s sentence for the misdemeanour assault.
Chief Deputy Yellowstone County attorney Juli M. Pierce said after the hearing that she respected the two sentences the judges gave Ferguson.
“We’ll continue to prosecute domestic violence cases no matter what the outcome is,” she said, shortly after Ferguson was taken into custody. “We’ll continue to fight that fight because that’s why we’re here – for the protection of the community.”

More than two years after the mysterious death of Pastor Zachery Tims in a New York City hotel room, the cause is now known: a toxic, fatal combination of cocaine and heroin.
The New York Medical Examiner’s Office released the cause of death Thursday after a drawn-out legal battle by the Apopka preacher’s mother, Madeline Tims, to keep the cause sealed.
The NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner’s release says Tims died of “acute intoxication by the combined effects of cocaine and heroin. Manner of death: Accident.” The release came after a New York appellate court ruling Dec. 10 upheld a lower court decision that the Medical Examiner’s office had the authority to release the cause of death, according to a spokesperson with the law firm representing Madeline Tims.
Officials from Tims’ church, New Destiny Christian Center, did not return a call for comment. Riva Tims, his former wife, also did not respond to a request for comment. Tims, 42, died in the W Hotel on Aug. 12, 2011. Although the New York Police Department ruled no foul play in his death, published reports said police found a packet of powder in his pants pockets — spawning speculation that he died of a drug overdose.
Tims, who grew up in Baltimore, was candid about his past, which included violence and drug addiction as a teenager. In the eulogy at Tims’ funeral, evangelist T.D. Jakes characterized Tims as an imperfect man who ministered to imperfect people.
“He tried hard to heal himself, to fix himself,” said Jakes, chief pastor of The Potter’s House in Dallas. Tims was open to his congregation of about 7,500 about his own failings — including his life of crime and drugs as a young person and the infidelity that cost him his marriage in 2009.
Riva Tims filed for divorce in 2008 and she started her own church, Majestic Life Ministries, in Orlando. Initially stated as “irreconcilable differences,” the real reason behind the divorce, according to Riva Tims, seen below, was her husband’s alleged “multiple and repeated extramarital s*xual affairs.”
In interviews following her former husband’s death, Riva Tims said she knew of Zachery’s drug abuse in the past, but didn’t know he was still using drugs. “I had no idea it was so much. I’ll put it this way: It’s one thing to have a struggle; it’s another thing to have a lifestyle,” Riva Tims told Ebony magazine. “When it’s a struggle, there’s grace. But when it’s a lifestyle, there’s no grace.”
After Tims’ death, and the selection of Paula White as his successor, Riva launched a failed effort to regain control of the church she started with Zachery in 1996. Together, the couple grew New Destiny into one of the largest churches in Central Florida.
New Destiny built a $3.4 million, 34,000-square-foot center in Apopka as a safe place where area youths could hang out after school.

Christmas Tragedy Occurs In Lagos And Cross River States

It was a bloody Christmas celebration in Lagos and Cross River states as no fewer than nine persons were killed in auto accidents on Tuesday night and on Wednesday morning.

Five people comprising a baby, her mother, two brothers and a driver died on Wednesday in the Lagos State accident, while four youths died in the Cross River accident.
In Lagos, our correspondent learnt that apart from the five people that perished on Christmas day, another lady suffered a fracture after a container which was on an articulated truck fell on a commercial bus on Alaba Suru Road in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun area of Lagos.
Eyewitnesses said the baby, her mother, the two brothers and the bus driver, who were victims of the accident, were returning from the Lagos Island.
It was said the two brothers went to purchase bangers for the New Year celebration
The crash was said to have been caused by a mentally unstable woman, who laid in the middle of the road, thereby creating confusion for the truck driver who was on top speed.
Eyewitnesses told PUNCH Metro that the yellow LT bus, with number plate, MUS-975-XC, had also stopped by the side of the road to drop off a passenger, which precipitated the accident.
A resident, Mohammed Wasiu, said, “The incident happened around 8.30am. I saw the mad woman walking around this morning. She just decided to sleep on the road at that time.
“The LT bus was going towards Mile 2. There were about eight people in the bus. The driver decided to stop because someone wanted to get down from the bus.
“As this was going on, the truck was coming on full speed. There were two trucks; one was already ahead, so the second truck driver wanted to catch up.
“When he got to that point and saw the mad woman on the road, he wanted to avoid crushing her. As he maneuvered the truck, its side hit the bus, and the container fell on the bus.”
Wasiu said residents immediately rushed to the scene and began to cut the vehicle with saws in order to save the occupants who were in pain.
Another eyewitness, who did not identify himself, said, “The two brothers who were at the back of the bus were trapped. They had packs of bangers that they just bought. The woman, who wore a shawl, and was carrying a baby, could not also escape. They all died, including the driver.
“It was only a lady that was at the entrance to the door that escaped with a fracture.”
After the accident, angry residents were said to have seized the mentally unstable lady and beaten her up. Some of the residents said it was the second time she would trigger such accident. She was, however, rescued by policemen.
At the rescue operation scene were officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, policemen, and the Lagos State Emergency Medical Services.
The NEMA spokesperson, South-West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye said, “The incident happened at 8.30am, but we were not alerted till around 11.46am. NEMA was able to mobilise other rescue officials to the scene. At the end of the rescue operation, a woman and her baby with two men died, while a lady was rescued alive. She however had a fractured leg. The corpses have been taken to a mortuary in Oshodi.”
The police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State, Ngozi Braide, said she would call back to give details on the accident.
In Cross River, four youths were on Tuesday killed, while several others were injured after a Mercedes Benz 911 truck rammed into them by the road side at the Akamkpa area of the Calabar-Ikom highway.
The incident, which occurred around the state’s college of education in Awi, Akamkpa Local Government Area, left the community in mourning.
PUNCH Metro gathered on Wednesday that the truck with number plate, Lagos FKJ 505 XC, was immediately burnt by angry mob, while the driver, Chidi Duruba, and the truck conductor, Edwin Oragunye, were thoroughly beaten up.
Two of the injured persons are Blessing Etim and Okechukwu Mbaka. The whereabouts of the six other injured persons could not be immediately ascertained.
An eyewitness, Ekam Emmanuel, said, “About 6am on Tuesday, some youths from Mbarakom community decided to go for a road walk along the Calabar-Ikom highway.
“A Mercedes Benz 911 truck with the number plate, FKJ 505 XC rammed into them from behind and the incident claimed four lives on the spot while several others were injured.
“This incident happened at 6am when I came to clean my shop. I met the youths jogging on the highway but suddenly a truck coming from Calabar on high speed climbed on the four that died on the spot.
“As a result of the tragedy, the Mbarakom youths got angry, the truck driver and his conducter were almost killed when they stopped to see what had happened. They were seriously beaten up, while the truck was set ablaze.”
Emmanuel said another truck, marked Cross River, KAM 45 XA, was also forcefully stopped by the angry mob and set ablaze. He added that the driver escaped being lynched.
She said the anger continued as the youths further burnt another oncoming Audi 80 commercial car, adding that the intervention of the combined team of military and police patrol teams brought the situation under control.
A police officer in the Akamkpa division, Eric Bassey, who is of the traffic department, confirmed the report. He said, “The DPO got an early morning distress call that there was a riot going on in Awi. He immediately gave us orders and on getting to the scene we discovered that three vehicles were burnt and some casualties were there.
“The casualties included some dead bodies, while several others, who sustained injuries, were taken to the hospital for medical attention.
“We were informed that the driver and the conductor of the truck that caused the accident were being held hostage at Mbarakom. We acted swiftly, but discovered that they had been beaten up badly. We rescued them and took them to the General Hospital at Akamkpa where they are still receiving treatment.”
He said peace had been restored in the troubled community.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, confirmed the incident, adding that the police had been able to bring the situation under control.

Guy Eats Out of Dumpsters for a Week to Highlight Food Waste

Rob Greenfield, a 27-year-old adventurer from San Diego, took up a unique cause. He wanted to create awareness about the large amounts of food wasted in the U.S, so he decided to travel the country and eat out dumpsters for a week.
It’s surprising, the kind of food Greenfield gets from the trash. His refrigerator is filled with fresh fruits, vegetables and bagels worth $200. And he hasn’t paid a penny for any of it. All he does is ‘dumpster dive’ behind grocery stores, which means he shuffles through the food discarded by store workers. “Some people call it nasty,” he says. “It’s just a matter of perspective.”
Greenfield has taken dumpster-eating to a whole new level. He created 21 Gourmet Dumpster Meals to showcase “the flaws in the American food system and inspire people to be part of the solution.” Surprisingly, Greenfield does not encourage people to follow him and eat from dumpsters. “I don’t recommend dumpster living to anybody. I recommend taking proper care not to put food in the dumpsters in the first place.”
According to the National Resources Defence Council, Americans throw away food worth $165 million every year. That’s about 90 billion pounds of perfectly edible food. Greenfield says that the U.S. produces enough food to feed twice its population. But most of it is wasted or inefficiently used. He suggests that instead of throwing away food, locals make a conscious effort to donate food to the San Diego Rescue Mission and San Diego Food Bank.
Greenfield has created a video of his experiences, called ‘Dumpster Diving with Rob Greenfield’. His first stop was at a grocery store in Holdrege, Nebraska, where he got enough loot to feed him for three whole months. He biked 4,700 miles in 104 days and 70 percent of his diet was from dumpsters. This experience prompted him to take on the 7-day challenge.
